Research and Curatorial Collective Southeast Asian Art Study

AS is a curatorial and research collective launched by Moon Hayn and Jo Hyunah. We aim to rewrite the history of visual art in Southeast Asia through their research, breaking away from standardized art education centred on Western art history. Works of AS suggest that continued research in this field is essential. 

We aspire to explore artworks, exhibitions, and documents that reflect the socio-political perspectives of the recent past, recognizing that the visual art developed by eight countries and regions under Japanese influence before the Pacific War (including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia) — which underwent histories of colonization, war, and dictatorship — has been omitted from our “official” art history education.

AS는 문혜인과 조현아로 이루어진 스터디 및 큐레토리얼 콜렉티브로, 서구 미술사 중심으로 이루어진 제도권 미술교육을 받은 두 명의 연구자가 자력으로 동남아시아 시각예술사 재서술을 시도하며, 이를 위한 연구가 계속되어야 한다는 의미를 내포하고 있다.

우리는 태평양전쟁 이전 일본의 영향 아래 있었던 8개국 및 지역(말레이시아 · 싱가포르 · 인도네시아 · 홍콩 · 필리핀 · 미얀마 · 베트남 · 캄보디아 · 인도네시아 등)이 식민과 전쟁, 독재의 역사를 거치며 발전시킨 시각예술이 우리의 ‘정규’ 미술사 교육에서 누락된 정보임을 인지하고, 근과거의 사회적 시각을 반영하는 미술작품과 전시, 기록물을 살펴가는 것을 목표한다.

모눈종이에 픽셀로 그려진 남동아시아 지도는 AS가 스터디를 기반으로 수행해온 대안적 연구 과정을 보여준다. AS는 서구와 군부, 제도가 그려온 북반구 선진국 중심의 그리드를 우회하며 읽기와 쓰기, 오역과 재생산으로써 ‘남동’을 기준으로 한 시각예술사의 지대를 펼쳐갈 예정이다.
