During times of turmoil, underground tunnels—dug somewhere in the village by someone, in order to protect the vulnerable such as grain stores, children, and women, and to ensure survival—have, over generations, faded into obscurity or been erased altogether. Suri Lee visited her ancestral village in search of these tunnels and traces of her grandfather who once safeguarded them, collecting the stories of those who had passed through. This journey was, in turn, a process of seeking her own story.
Following the lives of those who embroider and weave ramie is likewise an autoethnographic practice through which she writes herself into being. A designer, writer, and—one might say—a curiosity-driven traveler, Suri explores what it means to be “Korean,” connecting it to everyday spaces while continually expanding the horizons of her own practice.
혼란의 시기, 곡식과 어린이, 여성 등 약자를 보호하기 위해, 생존을 도모하기 위해 마을의 어딘가, 또 누군가에 의해 만들어졌던 땅굴은 세대를 거치며 그 존재가 모호해지거나 삭제되었다. 이수경은 땅굴과 그것을 지켰던 조부의 흔적을 찾아 옛 마을을 방문하고 거쳐간 이들의 이야기를 수집했다. 그 여정은 곧 자신의 이야기를 찾아가는 것이기도 했다. 수를 놓고 모시를 만드는 이들을 쫓는 일 역시 자신이 누구인지 써 내려가는 자전적 민족지의 실천이다. 디자이너이자 작가, 그리고 호기심 가득한 여행가(라고 부르고 싶은) 이수경은 ‘한국적인 것’을 탐구하고 이를 일상적 공간으로 연결하며, 스스로의 지평을 넓히는 중이다.
